This includes correcting any imperfections in the appearance of the mouth. Anyone who is unhappy with his/her smile can have it changed. Usually the upper teeth show most when smiling while the lower teeth are more visible when speaking. The color, alignment, spacing as well as regularity can be improved with cosmetic dentistry to give anyone a stunning smile. A wide variety of cosmetic options is offered in our office, such as whitening, smile design, re-contouring the shape of the teeth, veneers, bonding, and all ceramic/porcelain crowns.
This is the procedure of making teeth whiter, and therefore creating a brighter smile. Our office uses the professional tray whitening method.
This method involves taking impressions so the laboratory can fabricate custom vinyl trays. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 3 hours, or overnight. The entire process takes 3-4 weeks of daily use. Three different strengths of gel may be used, however the higher the strength the greater the possibility of tooth sensitivity. The tray method may be used to whiten any smile, even tetracycline staining, though it may take several months of use to see significant color improvement. For maintenance of whitened teeth, the trays should be used every several months.
Veneers are used in a dental procedure in which a covering is cemented or bonded on the outside (visible portion) of the tooth. Veneers are usually done on the parts of the teeth that are visible when talking or smiling. The procedure can be direct or indirect.
The direct technique usually involves placing composite resin on the outside of the tooth using a bonding agent. This method is usually referred to as "bonding."
The indirect method usually involves two appointments because the veneers will be fabricated in a dental laboratory. During the first appointment the teeth are prepared, impressions are taken, and the teeth are given a temporary covering. It takes the lab 2-3 weeks to process the coverings or veneers. The temporaries are removed at the second appointment, and the veneers are bonded to the teeth. The laboratory-fabricated veneers are usually made using porcelain or pressed ceramic, and are very aesthetic.
The advantage of veneers versus crowns is that much less tooth structure is removed, and the procedure is generally less uncomfortable. Veneers are recommended for teeth that have large fillings or little tooth structure remaining.
